USF Football Rolls Past Charlotte, 54-26

On “Flashback Friday” at Raymond James Stadium, South Florida combined nostalgia with dominance in a 54-26 rout of Charlotte to open its 13th season of American Athletic Conference play. The Bulls, wearing throwback helmets featuring the retro “Robo Bull” logo and displaying the emblem at midfield, looked every bit like the program’s vintage teams of the past. Behind a stifling defense and a record-setting ground game, USF (4-1, 1-0 AAC) rolled past the 49ers (1-4, 0-2) with 631 total yards, including 407 on the ground, while forcing four turnovers.

The Bulls’ defense set the tone early, smothering Charlotte’s offense and forcing the 49ers off the field in three plays or fewer on six of their first eight possessions. Charlotte managed just 13 yards in that span, while the Bulls added a blocked punt for a safety and an interception to build early momentum. By night’s end, USF extended its streak to 13 consecutive games with a takeaway, continuing to establish a defensive identity that matched the energy of the program’s throwback celebration.

The offense fed off that dominance, erupting for 23 first-quarter points—the Bulls’ highest-scoring opening period since last November. Quarterback Byrum Brown led the way with a career night, accounting for five touchdowns. He threw for 211 yards and four scores while adding a career-high 162 rushing yards and another touchdown, marking his sixth career 100-yard rushing game. True freshman receiver Jeremiah Koger added his own breakout moment, hauling in his first career catch for a 38-yard touchdown and finishing with four receptions for 75 yards. Running back Cartevious Norton, a transfer from Charlotte, gave the night an added layer of irony when he gashed his former team for a 37-yard touchdown on USF’s first possession. He tallied 69 yards before leaving late with an upper-body injury.

USF wasted no time asserting control. After Norton’s opening strike, Brown connected with Koger on a deep touchdown to make it 13-0. The defense then delivered again, forcing a punt from deep inside Charlotte’s territory. Jair Murphy broke through and blocked the kick for a safety, extending the lead to 16-0. Minutes later, Brown capped another drive with a 10-yard touchdown toss to Stanford transfer Mudia Reuben, who notched his first score as a Bull. By the time kicker Nico Gramatica drilled a 43-yard field goal to make it 26-0 in the second quarter, the outcome felt all but decided.

Charlotte capitalized on one of Brown’s two interceptions to finally put points on the board and cut the deficit to 26-7, but the 49ers never seriously threatened. They clawed within two scores in the fourth quarter, trimming the margin to 33-18, but USF’s offense quickly reasserted itself. Brown capped a late drive with a 13-yard rushing touchdown, his fifth score of the evening, as the Bulls pulled away for good.

The statistics underscored USF’s dominance. The Bulls’ 407 rushing yards were the fifth-highest single-game total in program history, continuing a two-year streak of punishing Charlotte on the ground after piling up a record 425 rushing yards against the 49ers last season. The offense ran 97 plays, producing 631 yards, the second-most under head coach Alex Golesh. Both teams combined for four turnovers apiece and 18 penalties, but USF’s ability to generate explosive plays overshadowed its miscues.

Individual performances highlighted the night’s storylines. Brown once again showed his dual-threat ability by producing his second straight game with four passing touchdowns and one rushing score. Koger introduced himself to the conference with a memorable debut, while Reuben found the end zone in his first major moment with the program. On defense, linebacker Jhalyn Shuler anchored the group with 10 tackles and a forced fumble, while cornerback Jarvis Lee added his second interception of the season to set up another scoring drive.

With the victory, USF continues to show momentum early in conference play, blending explosive offense with opportunistic defense. The Bulls now turn their focus to another Friday night primetime clash on October 10, when they travel to Denton, Texas, to face North Texas on ESPN2. The Mean Green (4-0, 1-0 AAC) enter the game unbeaten and well-rested after a bye week. For USF, the victory over Charlotte was more than just a nod to the past; it was a statement that the Bulls may be building toward a promising future.
