Rays’ Ramos to miss All-Star start after hamstring injury
- Updated: July 16, 2018
Wilson Ramos will not be able to play in Tuesday’s All-Star Game, he said following Saturday’s game vs. the Twins.
The Tampa Bay catcher was removed from the Rays’ 19-6 win with tightness in his left hamstring. He said the injury occurred when he was running out a ground ball to third in the sixth inning.
The 30-year-old Ramos is hitting .297 with 14 home runs and 51 RBIs and was set to be the starting catcher for the American League at Nationals Park.
“I was very excited to participate in that game,” Ramos said. “Now, I’m very sad. I worked really hard to make that team. But I will be there with my family and get some time there.”
While he won’t be able to play in the game, he said he would still travel to Washington for the All-Star Game festivities.
Ramos said he isn’t sure if he will have to go on the disabled list.
“Hopefully it gets better soon,” Ramos said. “I still have half a season left … It’s better to miss one game than two months. Just have to be smart, do my rehab well and come back strong.”
