Bulls Open Camp on 21st Season

A seasoned USF team led by 56 upperclassmen and 16 returning starters will get to work Monday building on last year’s 11-2 campaign, as head coach Charlie Strong opens the earliest starting fall camp in program history.

The Bulls reported to begin the 21st season of USF football on Sunday afternoon and will hit the practice fields for the first time Monday afternoon starting at 4:30 p.m. USF features 100 players on its roster from the state of Florida and 21 in the opening two-deep that hail from the Bay Area, including 10 listed as starters as camp opens. USF practices are not open to the public.

The camp opening date of July 24 is the earliest in program history, as the Bulls begin five weeks of preparations and the first of 26 practices leading up to the 2017 season-opener on Sat., Aug. 26 at San Jose State (7:30 ET kick, on CBSSN).

Senior quarterback Quinton Flowers (Miami) leads seven returning starters for a USF offense that shattered program records in 2016 and ranked fourth in the nation scoring (43.8 ppg) and 11th in yards per game (511.5 ypg). Flowers, the 2016 American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year, is the first Bull ever named to four preseason national award watch lists as he appears on lists for the Maxwell, Walter Camp, Davey O’Brien and Johnny Unitas awards.

The Bulls return nine starters on defense led by senior cornerback Deatrick Nichols (Miami), who was named to national watch lists for the Bednarik, Nagurski and Thorpe awards, and senior defensive tackle Deadrin Senat (Immokalee), who was named to the Nagurski and Outland Trophy watch lists.

USF was selected the favorite to win the American Athletic Conference by conference media last week. The Bulls were ranked in the Top 25 in polls by every major preseason publication.
