Winston leads Bucs to 31-24 win over Falcons

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston overcame a rocky first quarter, including an intercepted pass and two failed deep passes into the end zone — to throw four touchdowns in a 31-24 win over the Atlanta Falcons.

Winston completed 23 of 33 passes for 281 yards, four touchdowns and an interception.

On the pick, Winston, who was backed up into his own end zone, appeared to have a miscommunication with wide receiver Vincent Jackson, who broke out on the route, with Desmond Trufant picking him off. He also couldn’t connect with Adam Humphries and Vincent Jackson on second-and-16 and third-and-16, respectively.

On the first scoring drive, Winston rolled out on a bootleg to find Brandon Myers for a 4-yard touchdown. It was set up by a big 26-yard gain by Adam Humphries on a screen pass, with three Falcons defenders diving at him and missing.

With :24 to go in the first half, Winston checked down to running back Charles Sims, who spun and cartwheeled his way into the end zone for a 23-yard score. He made four defenders miss all at once and then two more.

In the second half, Winston got the deep ball going, with two beautiful throws downfield. The first was to tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins on a 30-yard bomb that had him diving into the back of the end zone, and then a rainbow to Mike Evans for 45 yards with Robert Alford draped on his back.

The Bucs scored 21 unanswered points before Matt Ryan hit a hobbled Julio Jones, who’d been battling an ankle injury, for a 25-yard touchdown and a successful two-point conversion with 1:42 to go in the third quarter.

The Falcons’ defense, which struggled in giving up explosive plays all day, was able to keep the Bucs out of the end zone the entire fourth quarter, but the Bucs’ defense kept them in it, despite giving up 95 receiving yards to Tevin Coleman, 80 yards Mohamed Sanu and 60 to Jones.

It was the Bucs’ third-straight win over the Falcons going back to last year.
