USA topple Canada at World Junior Championships
- Updated: December 26, 2015
Team USA scored three times in the third period to turn a 1-1 tie into a 4-2 victory over Canada to open the 2016 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Junior Championship on Saturday.
North Dakota forwards Brock Boeser and Nick Schmaltz both suited up and saw regular action for the Americans, who registered their first preliminary round victory over Canada since 1998. Schmaltz recorded a pair of shots on goal and an even plus/minus rating while Boeser was a plus-1.
The duo opened the tournament as linemates, as they’ve been for much of UND’s season through 20 games.
Louie Belpedio, Zach Werenski, Colin White, and Auston Matthews scored the USA goals, while goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic stopped 25 of 27 shots with Canada holding a 27-15 advantage in shots on goal.
White was named Team USA Player of the Game.
The U.S. will continue play at the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship at 9 a.m. ET on Monday (Dec. 28) when it takes on Sweden.
