Tampa Bay Rays walk off with 2-1 win despite Clay Buchholz gem for Boston Red Sox

Clay Buchholz fired six innings of two-hit ball, but it wasn’t enough for the Red Sox.

Rene Rivera shot a single just inside the third-base line to score Allan Dykstra in the bottom of the ninth as Tampa Bay walked off with a 2-1 win over the Red Sox.

The Rays won two of three against the Red Sox, marking Boston’s first series loss this season.

The only blemish Buchholz allowed came in the second inning when Evan Longoria led off with a double to center and scored on a Logan Forstyhe single up the middle. Buchholz hit a batter but showed conviction in striking out the final two batters – one swinging and one looking.

The righthander continued to work around counts. He lost an 11-pitch battle to leadoff hitter David DeJesus in the third but battled back with back to back strikeouts before a ground out to second.

In the sixth, he allowed a leadoff walk but got a strikeout of the next batter and a ground out to erase the lead runner. Buchholz finished off his night with a swinging strikeout of Dykstra.

His six innings were the most a Red Sox starter had thrown since Buchholz did it in his last start.

Buchholz struck out 10 over six innings, allowing one run on just two hits and three walks. He registered 13 swings and misses.

But the Red Sox offense could do nothing against Rays starter Jake Odorizzi and the Rays bullpen.

Pablo Sandoval led off the second with a double down the right field line and scored on a sacrifice fly from Daniel Nava as the lone Red Sox run of the game.
