Tampa Bay Bucs Trade Safety Dashon Goldson To Washington Redskins

Safety Dashon Goldson, who came to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on a five-year, $41.25 million deal in March 2013, was traded to the Washington Redskins on Friday.

The swap includes the Bucs sending their seventh-round pick next year to Washington in exchange for the Redskins’ sixth-round selection in 2016.

Goldson, 30, appeared expendable after the Bucs signed safety Chris Conte to a one-year deal March 12. Goldson, a two-time Pro Bowl player, had 151 tackles, nine passes defensed, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one tackle for loss in 27 games with Tampa Bay. But he had just one interception in his time with the Bucs, and he never appeared like a strong fit within coach Lovie Smith’s Tampa-2 defensive scheme last year.

In 2013, Goldson’s aggressive style of play in the secondary cost him a significant amount. He was fined four times, the total equaling $455,000, and he was suspended for one game. Last year, he hired a tackling coach to help him with his technique.

Goldson entered the NFL as a fourth-round pick, 126th overall, by the San Francisco 49ers in 2007. He was named to the Pro Bowl after the 2011 and 2012 seasons.
