Jameis Winston Reportedly Pursuing $750K-Per-Year Apparel Deal
- Updated: March 9, 2015
Jameis Winston is approximately two months away from getting his first NFL contract, but the former Florida State quarterback reportedly has begun eyeing other sources of income in the meantime.
According to ESPN’s Darren Rovell, Winston is seeking $750,000 per year from a deal that includes shoes and other merchandise:
Winston has been busy preparing for the stardom that comes with being a high draft pick and playing in the NFL. On March 3, Rovell reported the 2013 Heisman winner was attempting to trademark “Famous Jameis,” his nickname from his Florida State days.
With the explosion in popularity of shoes and authentic merchandise from professional athletes over recent years, Winston’s contract demands are certainly in line with other high-profile quarterbacks recently taken high in the draft.
For example, after the Carolina Panthers selected Cam Newton first overall in 2011, he signed a deal with Under Armour worth more than $1 million per season. At the time, Newton was coming off a Heisman win and national championship at Auburn.
Winston’s NFL destination won’t be known until April 30, but he did pay a visit to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, owners of the No. 1 overall pick, in early March, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter:
Winston likely won’t be available in the draft for long. Even if Tampa Bay passes on him, teams like the Tennessee Titans (No. 2) and New York Jets (No. 6) are in the market for a quarterback. He is already a star from his two years playing at Florida State.
All of this adds up to a potentially lucrative merchandise contract for Winston. He’s going to have plenty of suitors and should have no trouble adding some extra cash to his bank account before he takes a professional snap in the NFL.
