Florida’s Late Comeback Falls Short in Loss to Ole Miss

Redshirt senior Kayla Lewis scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season and 10th of her career in Florida’s 64-57 loss to Southeastern Conference foe Ole Miss at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center on Thursday night.

Despite forcing four turnovers through the first 4:44 of play, Florida’s offense sputtered as the Rebels ran out to 11-0 lead.

With the Gators down 15 points with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first half, sophomore Ronni Williams made back-to-back baskets to spark a UF rally that brought the Gators within nine points of the visitors, but Ole Miss entered the half leading, 35-20.

After trailing by as many as 22 points in the second stanza, Florida chipped its way back into the game slowly cutting the Ole Miss lead.

At the 5:16 mark, Lewis ignited a furious 14-3 run on a layup that brought the Gators within three and brought the score to 60-57. During the run, Florida shot a perfect 5-of-5 from the field.

The Rebels’ Tia Faleru put the game out of reach, converting on 3-of-4 free throws to end the game over the last minute of play.

Williams finished with a team-high 15 points and added six rebounds, two steals and one block.

Ole Miss’ Tia Faleru (16 points, 12 rebounds) and A’Queen Hayes (15 points, 10 rebounds) led the Rebels statistically.
