Gerald Willis III dismissed, transferring from Florida
- Updated: January 6, 2015
Florida defensive lineman Gerald Willis III is transferring from Florida, and it might not have been his choice.
The Gainesville Sun’s Zach Abolverdi reported Tuesday that Willis had been dismissed from the team and was hoping to transfer to Texas A&M.
A statement released from Florida’s University Ahltetic Association through through the program’s official Twitter account, noted only that Willis “will be transferring from the football program.”
Willis, a freshman from New Orleans, played in eight games in a reserve role in 2014, making 14 tackles. He is the half-brother of Alabama safety Landon Collins.
Willis made news in October when he got into a fight with backup quarterback Skyler Mornhinweg over a pair of cleats. But former head coach Will Muschamp said then that the incident was “blown out of proportion” and neither player was disciplined.
New head coach Jim McElwain assumed full control of the team this week following the Gators’ 28-20 win over East Carolina in the Birmingham Bowl under interim coach D.J. Durkin, who is reportedly headed to Michigan as the Jim Harbaugh’s defensive coordinator.
