Panthers hammer Cardinals 27-16 to advance
- Updated: January 3, 2015
The Cardinals couldn’t overcome their lack of a quarterback for much longer.
And the Panthers proved yet again they could win without theirs having to do it all himself.
The Panthers advanced to the divisional round of the NFC playoffs with a dominant 27-16 win over the Cardinals, for their first home playoff win since 2004.
The Panthers mainly kept Ryan Lindley from becoming something other than Ryan Lindley. The poor Cards third-stringer — bless his heart — couldn’t move his team at all.
The Cards gained just 78 yards, breaking the previous record 86 yards by the 1958 Browns. The Cardinals managed just seven first downs on the day.
Lindley was 16-of-28 passing for 81 yards, with a touchdown and two interceptions, and was sacked four times.
That’s fewer than Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart had himself, as the Panthers running back had 24 carries for 123 yards and a touchdown as they bludgeoned the Cardinals Defense.
Cam Newton wasn’t particularly sharp, and frankly threw far too often. But the Panthers Defense allowed them plenty of margin for error.
The Panthers will play either the Seahawks or the Packers next week, depending on the result of tomorrow’s Lions-Cowboys game. A Detroit win would send the Panthers to Green Bay, while a Cowboys win would set up an Ice Bowl rematch and the Panthers would go to Seattle.
