Colgate Captures Three Rivers Classic

Sophomore Charlie Finn made 26 saves and Colgate scored six unanswered goals to win the Three Rivers Classic at Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center, 6-1 over Robert Morris.

The Raiders held the nation’s highest-scoring offense to one goal for just the second time this season. RMU sophomore Dalton Izyk finished with 46 saves as Colgate held a 52-27 shot advantage.

“We just stuck to our game, didn’t try to do anything too complicated,” Finn said. “They made my night very easy.”

Junior Tylor Spink scored his first goal of the season in just his third game after returning from injury, one of six different Colgate goal scorers.

“If you want to win a championship … you’re going to need balance, and that’s something we’re getting right now,” Vaughan said.

“We have a gameplan, we have a system we want to play, and we try to do that regardless of the score, and we did that tonight.”

The Raiders’ victory means that the Three Rivers Classic trophy has gone to three different programs in three years — the Colonials won the inaugural event and Boston College claimed the holiday title last season.

“We’re disappointed because we wanted to win a championship in our hometown,” RMU coach Derek Schooley said. “We’re a good, fast hockey team, but we were a step behind tonight for whatever reason. Colgate exploited that.”

The Colonials, who downed Penn State, 4-2, in Monday’s semifinal, won’t have too much time to think about their most lopsided loss of the season. Robert Morris has a modified home-and-home series coming up against Bowling Green, starting with the first outdoor game in program history Saturday at Toledo’s Fifth Third Field.

“We’re going to put this behind us,” Schooley said. “Last time I checked it’s one game of 34. You can’t take anything away from what we’ve done so far. We were sitting here last year at 2-12-2, so hat’s off to our guys who’ve turned it around.”

In the consolation game, Lukas Hafner made 32 saves as Western Michigan defeated Penn State, 4-1.

WMU picked up two goals from Aidan Muir, with one each from Sheldon Dries and Colton Hargrove.
